5 foods that can make you look older than you are

It’s no secret that what we eat and drink can affect the way we look and feel, and in some cases, it’s not for the better, in our last blog, we talked about all the foods that can boost your anti-aging process but they are also some foods to watch out for that can deactivate that effect.

So here are 5 foods you should limit if you want to look your best at any age.

1. Sugar

When people consume sugar than their cells synthesize, causing excess sugar particles to bond with proteins and triggering a process that affects the skin’s collagen production which is an essential part of the skin’s elasticity and youthful look, and it can also stain your teeth causing tooth decay and discoloration.

It’s no secret that sugar also causes weight gain, creates wrinkles, and gives your skin a saggy look, “Baked goods and other sweets are often rich in added sugars and fat, which can lead to weight gain and poor dental health,” says Alexandra Miller, RDN, LDN, Corporate Dietitian at Medifast. “Sugar promotes an unhealthy microbiome and it is also pro-inflammatory. All of these characteristics can accelerate the aging process,” she adds.

2. Alcohol

We previously talked about the benefits of red wine as an anti-aging drink, but overconsumption of alcohol can lead to some serious consequences to your health.

A healthy liver equals healthy skin. “When your liver is functioning well, toxins that could potentially affect the skin are expelled naturally through your body,” says Dr. Ostad. “But if toxins build up in your liver, and aren’t broken down properly, your skin can develop a variety of issues, like acne, sallowness, and wrinkles.” 

Alcohol is also extremely dehydrating and bad for your sleep “Inadequate sleep is linked to wrinkles, uneven pigmentation, and reduced skin elasticity,” says Dr. Ostad.

Drinking too much alcohol can even trigger Acne and possibly rosacea and wrinkles due to the toxins build-up in the body since alcohol is considered a toxin.

3. Salt

Salty foods can retain water and cause a “puffy” look. It is recommended to use minimum salt and opt for fresh foods, rather than preserved or pre-cooked ones. It also causes the cells to shrink and leads to dehydration. Not enough water leaves the skin with wrinkles and, as a result, makes it age faster.

4. Trans fats

Apart from causing heart damage, trans fats lead to faster aging of your skin. They facilitate swelling and could also result in your skin having more exposure to UV radiation.

You can find trans fats in canned frosting, deep-fried foods, fast-foods, any junk food, and margarine. Besides increasing the dangers of contracting cardiovascular ailments, they make the arteries stiff or narrow the blood vessels. This weakens the skin’s blood flow and results in aging, which is premature, including fine lines.

5. Dairy

Sure, dairy has lots of good nutrients like bone-building calcium, protein, and vitamin D. But companies often add extra sugars to low-fat varieties in order to compensate for the loss of flavor. Eating too much sugar can make your skin look older. 

Dairy can also increase inflammation in the body, which leads to oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is one of the main causes of premature aging. Diets low in dairy products are a great way to protect sun-exposed skin from wrinkling.

Although there are individual differences, the aging rate of some people may increase when they eat dairy products. Dairy meals can make some people have red swollen skin reactions. These skin problems can intensify, and many a time, when we do away with the dairy products, the skin improves.
